Did the selectors rule out Shubman Gill completely from the T20I set-up? The question has been surfacing across social media platforms since the team announcement for the T20Is in Ireland, England, and then in Japan for the 2026 Asian Games.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) removed the 2026 T20 World Cup-winning captain, Suryakumar Yadav, unceremoniously from the team to appoint Shreyas Iyer as the captain.
Shubman Gill was in the discussion to become the T20I captain
Before the official announcement, there were several reports that indicated multiple other names that were in the race to become the next T20I captain for India. It is Iyer who was eventually named as Suryakumar Yadav’s successor. Sanju Samson’s name was heavily engaged during the speculations.
According to a RevSportz report, Shubman Gill, the captain of Tests and ODIs of the Indian cricket team, was in contention to replace Yadav. According to the latest report, Shubman Gill had a strong case to emerge as the skipper for the third format too. Samson was also in the discussion.
“It is reliably learnt that the selection committee flirted with the idea of bringing Gill back into the T20I set-up, and even giving him captaincy, once it decided to move on from Surya after the World Cup,” the RevSportz report claims.
“Sources in the know said that the captaincy choice was narrowed down to two players — Shreyas and Shubman — although someone in the team management opined that Sanju, too, has leadership potential. Eventually, the selectors decided to hand over the responsibility to Shreyas until the Asian Games in September-October,” it added further.
BCCI to try with a different skipper in the near future?
At the end of the day, it was Shreyas Iyer who touched the finish line first. Along with multiple high-profile bilateral series and the Asian Games, India is scheduled to face Zimbabwe as well. To keep the mainstays fit for the high-class matches, the board could prepare a second squad for the Zimbabwe series.
Will the board appoint a new skipper for the tour, for a brief stint? It’ll be interesting to see.
The chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, mentioned during the team announcement that they picked Shreyas Iyer as the new captain for the T20Is because of his vast captaincy experience in the Indian Premier League and in domestic cricket.
A chapter far from being closed
A new cycle of T20 International will announce it beginning through India’s bilateral T20Is against Ireland. In the next couple of years, the Men in Blue will have to play multiple T20I contests, including the LA28 Olympics, and obviously the next T20 World Cup.
It is believed that in the next two years, a lot of things can be changed, and Shubman Gill remains a livewire on the discussion table.
“But the selectors haven’t put the lid on Gill as yet. Far from it. The new cycle will have the LA28 Olympics apart from the next T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand two years down the line. A period of two years is a long time in sport, and things can change,” the report further mentions.
